How the Charity Was Governed
What the charity's accountability page listed, and how to check any charity's governance today.
From the archive. Around 1998 to 2001 this web address carried the website of a small UK relief charity. This page keeps one of its items as a historical record. Relief Weekly, which publishes the site today, is an independent magazine with no connection to that charity; its name, the names of its staff and supporters, addresses, telephone numbers, registration details and donation forms have been removed, and lost pictures have been replaced with credited photographs of the places concerned. Nothing here is a current appeal.

The charity’s accountability page listed the professional firms behind it: its solicitors, a second firm of solicitors, its auditors, the address of its registered office, and its numbers as a company limited by guarantee and as a registered charity. Those details are more than twenty years old, no longer describe any current organisation, and have been removed.
The idea behind the page still holds. Any charity asking for money in England and Wales can be looked up on the Charity Commission’s register, which shows its trustees, income, spending and whether its accounts arrive on time.
