About Relief Weekly

Relief Weekly is an independent UK magazine about giving, volunteering and humanitarian aid. It explains, in plain words, the questions people ask when they want to help: how to check a charity, what Gift Aid does, how to volunteer well, what happens after a disaster, how famine is declared, what the words refugee and asylum seeker mean, and how long-term development works.

The magazine has four desks: Giving Well, Volunteering, Crises Explained and Aid & Development. Explainers are checked against official and primary sources such as GOV.UK and HMRC, the charity regulators, the Fundraising Regulator, the Disasters Emergency Committee, UN agencies and the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, and the sources are listed under each piece. The standards behind them are set out on the editorial standards page.

Around 1998 to 2001 this web address carried the website of a small UK relief charity. Its appeals, principles and photo captions are kept in the archive as a historical record. Relief Weekly is not that charity, is not a charity at all, and does not collect donations.

Photographs are freely licensed and credited under each picture; the full list is on the photo credits page. Partner material is labelled and kept apart from the editorial desks.
